Midnight, September 29
It’s the early hours of the morning,
And I’m trying to sleep.
I toss and turn but I can’t fall asleep.
The metal elephant that wraps around me,
Obscuring my view and invading my senses,
Soothes me with it’s dull thrumming engines,
And just as I fall asleep, there is a crunch,
A bang,
And the engines cut out.
I suddenly freeze,
Hoping that engines will turn back on,
But they don’t,
And so I pray that the germans don’t find us.
5:45 AM, September 30
The engine is still broken,
And I’m deep in slumber
When someone spots a submarine,
The alarm goes off.
I startle awake,
To this agonizing sound
Drilling into my ears,
And I realize my prayers have been in vain,
Almost as soon as I stand up,
I hear the first shot.
There is boom and the boat rocks.
I fall to my feet and taste blood.
I can feel this once mighty ship sinking, becoming a metal catacomb
The booming continues
As I rush to the stairs.
I get knocked off my feet once more,
But I make it to the deck.
The moment I make it out, I run back, Because death by fire
Is the only thing worse than drowning.
The heat is suffocating,
Making my eyes water,
And the barrage continues.
I risk the blistering metal again,
Burning almost red hot,
Scorching my hands and making me squint,
and poke my head out,
And I catch a glimpse of the U-Boat,
Destroying us like David destroying Goliath
Suddenly there is a flash of light from it,
So bright I can’t see,
A boom I barely register,
And I see a glint of metal,
Getting bigger and bigger
I understand too late,
And I duck in vain,
And then I see no more
It’s the early hours of the morning,
And I’m trying to sleep.
I toss and turn but I can’t fall asleep.
The metal elephant that wraps around me,

Soothes me with it’s dull thrumming engines,
